Coronavirus and your Children

Dear Back to Basics Families,

Hello! This has certainly been a challenging year for all of us! Fortunately, we at Back to Basics Pediatrics have been able to work with our families and be there for all of your concerns regarding COVID-19. We are committed to seeing your child - both sick and well using our necessary precautions to keep everyone safe.

Unfortunately, things are changing rapidly in regard to testing sites and recommendations. Please visit the CDC.gov website for specifics.

In regards to who needs to be tested, I would only be concerned about having your child (or yourself) tested if you are not feeling well with fever, cough, and shortness of breath OR if you have had DIRECT contact with someone who is COVID positive.

My wonderful office manager, Lori, has put together a list of locations that are offering COVID Antigen or Molecular testing as of 8/26/20. In addition, you can always visit the IDPH website for a listing of locations available for testing.

I currently have a molecular test for COVID-19 in my office that takes 3-4 days for results. I am reserving that for patients who present with questionable symptoms and have no known exposure. All sick visits are being asked to enter through our back entrance to avoid contact with our waiting room. Thankfully, everything has been working very smoothly!

For those patients with a known exposure, we can offer testing in the car with the molecular send out test, but this will be on a case by case basis. Please call our office with questions - we will try our best to accommodate your needs.

Also, I have a rapid COVID test that we have been using for a couple months. I am finding it very accurate. According to the data on the test, it has a 2.5% false negative rate (97.5% true negative) and 100% true positive (no false positives). I have a limited supply at this time of the rapid tests, but will use them when appropriate.

Please continue to wear your masks, social distance, and limit large groups or gatherings! This may be especially difficult with the holidays coming. Remember...the majority of children have very mild illness, so use your best judgement, but do not create anxiety for yourself or your child.

As usual, I am available 24/7, including weekends and evenings. Please feel free to call me with any concerns or questions!

With Love,

Dr. Christine
